Blog Post #49: Dialogue Work

Good Evening All!

Just getting some dialogue work in. Just wrote this a moment ago. Please feel free to have a look:

Theda lit a candle and placed it in a holder centered on a wooden table covered in manuscripts.
Rae snickered. “Really?”
“What?”
“A single flame? We’ve all but no light.”
“No one had asked you to read. You’re supposed to lookout.”
Rae upturned her palms. “How can I do that with no light?”
Theda sighed. “Just listen for footsteps on that staircase.” She sifted through the manuscripts and slid one closer to the candle. “Priests of Castlerock.”
Rae’s eyebrows elevated. “What that heck’s that about?” Eyes tacked to the staircase, she listened as her friend flipped pages.
“Seems to be about warrior priests who protect a town from vampires.”
Rae spun around. “Oh, I love action-packed vampire fiction!”
“Rae!” Theda pointed toward the staircase, and Rae turned around. “Good grief, Rae—sometimes it seems as though you want us to get caught.”
Rae shrugged. “Not really: Do you remember that night when we visited that farm?”
“How could I forget… the farmer had a rifle.”
“Sure did! Those are the nights I love—the ones when we only just get away.”
Theda shook her head. “That must give you quite a rush, huh?”
“Of course, as it should give you.” She grinned, gazed into a shadowy corner. “Do you know what I’d do if I had your power?”
Theda chucked. “That question is ‘What wouldn’t Rae do?’”
“Rae wouldn’t be cooped-up in some writer’s attic peeking through her manuscripts. I’d be out seeing the world.”
“Didn’t I tell you I’d take you to Everest this weekend? As soon as mom hits the highway to that weekend conference, I said I’d—”
“But there are other things to do besides see the highest mountain in the world.”
Theda closed the manuscript, placed it aside, and sat another before the candle. “Okay, so I suppose Everest is out.”
