Blog Post #44: Chapter to Nowhere II

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

Hope everyone’s doin’ exceptionally!! Here’s yet another text where I’d tried to create magic but had managed an trick one would find at a $0.99 store (..ha!)! Perhaps I should feel so bad about my chapter stall.. after all, it is practice. Well, here it is. Perhaps you could sense where this text fell short:

Eyes wide, Raven and I gazed at a corridor closet door. Moments passed, and she raised a hand to her mouth.

“By now, Jenna should’ve stepped out,” she said. “Do you think she’s—”

“Shhh.” Ear first, I leaned toward the door.

Raven leaned, as well, and then shrugged. “I don’t hear anything.”

I sighed. “I don’t either…”

“Then what are we gonna do, Caitlin? We can’t just leave her.”

I snatched my sleeve back, studied my wristwatch. “Jenna’s got two minutes. If she doesn’t—”

“But she may not have two minutes. She may be in trouble now.”

I chewed my lip, stared at a rusted knob.

“Well?” Raven said. “What are we waiting for? Let’s go!” She reached for the knob but I snatched her hand away. “What are you doing, Caitlin? That’s my sister in there!”

“I know she’s your sister but I’m eldest and am responsible for you two.”

“Whatever that’s worth,” she said. “Just beyond this door, my sister could be in a jungle being attacked by guerillas, or in the sky falling with a broken parachute, or in a hunted hedge maze being chased by hobgoblins while you’re standing here doing nothing.” She reached for the knob but I knocked her hand away. She thrust her opposite hand toward the knob and threw her shoulder into me but I shoved her away.

She threw her hands in the air. “So we stand out here and do nothing??”

“No, you’ll stand out here…” I turned toward the door, looked it up-and-down. “…I’m goin’ inside.” I stepped to the door, reached for the knob, and held it. I swallowed.

“Caitlin.”

I glanced at her.

“Be careful.”
